Terre Haute features several community attractions sure to please all. Residents and visitors alike can take in the beautiful scenery along the Wabash River. The river is a popular recreational site offering fishing, boating, and other watersports.
Beautiful local parks are a true quality to the community offering a wealth of activities throughout the year. Families can enjoy camping, nature trails, swimming, hiking and a great deal more. A “daytrip” to one of the many nearby state parks offers an abundance of diverse activities for all to enjoy. In the fall, residents and visitors flock by the thousands to the annual Covered Bridge Festival in nearby Parke County.
The Terre Haute Action Track features the nationally televised World of Outlaws Sprint Car races and the Silver Crown Midget races. This NHRA-sanctioned track is known as the Division III's fastest 1/8-mile track. Race fans see NHRA bracket racing, super pro, pro, street, motorcycle and junior dragsters.
In addition, Terre Haute hosts a variety of well-known events. Recent events include the Indianapolis Colts Summer Training Camp, National Clabber Girl Tournament, International Hovercraft Competitions, the Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant, and the Terre Haute Air Show featuring the F-16 Thunderbirds.
Retail sales play a large role in Terre Haute's economy. Honey Creek Mall, Meadows Shopping Center and Plaza North are the retail centers of the city. Numerous smaller retail malls offer a wide selection of shopping ranging from bookstores and clothing to furniture and hardware, etc. As the heart of a much larger sales area Terre Haute's MSA attracts customers 50 or more miles in every direction. Terre Haute is home to nearly 1700 hotel rooms and more than 200 restaurants that cater not only to the local economy, but also to a very stable tourism industry.
