Not only does Vigo County flourish from the economic influence of local universities, residents also benefit from the prevailing low unemployment rates. Manufacturing and industrial sectors remain solid leaders in local economic growth. Recently several companies have relocated to Terre Haute; Staples, CSN and Aisen Brake and Chassis are just a few. Coupled with the recent expansion from existing major employers, Pfizer, Bemis, AET, Columbia House and Sony-DADC, Terre Haute's job market offers excellent employment opportunities.

Technology sectors are emerging significantly due to the accomplishments of Rose-Hulman Ventures and the $40 million expansion of Terre Haute Regional Hospital. In addition, tourism has proven valuable to the area. Terre Haute is home to nearly 1700 hotel rooms and more than 200 restaurants that cater not only to the local economy, but also to a very stable tourism industry.

Retail sales also play a large role in Terre Haute's economy. Honey Creek Mall, Meadows Shopping Center and Plaza North are the retail centers of the city. As the heart of a much larger sales area Terre Haute's MSA attracts customers 50 or more miles in every direction.
